In 1370, Timur (Tamerlane) founded a powerful empire in Central Asia centered on Samarkand.

Through his campaigns he shook Iran, India, Syria, and Anatolia; in 1402 he defeated the Ottomans at Ankara and captured Bayezid the Thunderbolt (Yıldırım Bayezid). Alongside his destructive conquests, he transformed Samarkand into a magnificent center of art and architecture and pioneered the Timurid Renaissance.
