The Tokugawa Shogunate was established in 1603 when Tokugawa Ieyasu received the title of shogun.

After a long period of civil war, a centralized and stable government was achieved in Japan. During this period the capital was moved to Edo, an isolationist policy was pursued, and the country was governed in relative peace for about two and a half centuries. The Tokugawa era left deep marks on Japanese society.
