Many officials, including President Celal Bayar and Prime Minister Adnan Menderes, were arrested. After the coup, the National Unity Committee that was formed took control of the government, and a process of drafting a new constitution began. As a result of the trials, Adnan Menderes and two of his ministers were executed. The 27 May coup went down in history as the first military intervention in Turkey's multiparty era.
