Turkey Applies for EEC Membership

1987 CE · Türkiye · diplomatic

On 14 April 1987, Turkey applied for full membership in the European Economic Community (EEC) through the government led by the Prime Minister of the time, Turgut Özal.

Relations between Turkey and the EEC were based on the 1963 Ankara Agreement. The application was addressed in the opinion published by the Community in 1989; at that stage, the opening of membership negotiations was not deemed appropriate, but Turkey's eligibility for membership was confirmed and the development of relations was recommended.
