Turkey Joins NATO

1952 CE · Türkiye / NATO · diplomatic

Turkey, together with Greece, officially became a member of NATO on 18 February 1952.

This was the alliance's first enlargement. Membership reinforced Turkey's place within the Western bloc during the Cold War period and provided a guarantee of collective defense against the Soviet threat. The contribution of the Turkish troops sent to the Korean War had been influential in the membership decision. NATO membership became one of the fundamental axes of Turkish foreign policy and defense structure for many years.
