After Jerusalem passed under Muslim rule in 1187, the Third Crusade was launched around 1189 with the participation of European rulers.

The forces taking part in the expedition succeeded in recapturing some coastal cities, but Jerusalem could not be retaken. In the end, the agreement made with Saladin brought the expedition to a close by introducing certain arrangements concerning pilgrimage visits.
